JUST OPENED: FERNANDO AMORSOLO RETROSPECTIVE PART OF MY NATIONAL MUSEUM TOUR

The Museum of the Filipino People opened last Sept 25, 2008 a major Fernando Amorsolo retrospective highlighting his portrait work and drawings most of which are exhibited for the first time.

Fernando Amorsolo, our first National Artist Awardee, is recognized as the painter who captured the “Philippine Light.” Filipinos roundly agree that his sunsets and sunrises and typical countryside scenes capture the true colors and ambiance of local surroundings.
But a another avenue of Amorsolo’s creative expression is in his portraits of important people in our country. From early American Commissioners to Philippine presidents and to the local elite, Amorsolo faithfully captured his clients’ bearing and charm. He was the country’s favored portrait artists and some of his best works can now be appreciated during this retrospective.

Along with the portraits are Amorsolo’s sketches and drawings and Museum Curator Patrick Flores managed to match some of the drawings to the finished paintings giving visitors a sense of the artist’s creative process.

In addition, paintings by the country’s masters like Juan Luna, and the Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla hang to show their influence on Amorosolo’s works. Works by other renowned artists like Victorio Edades shows either being influenced by Amorsolo or departing from his classical painting tradition.
The incisive wall texts and the spacious gallery make for an enlightening visit and delightful visit to the National Museum.
John L. Silva, Senior Consultant of the National Museum now highlights the Amorsolo Retrospective in his three-hour, 20 gallery tour of the National Museum. The other highlights of the Museum’s collection, extensively explained during the tour are the Spoliarium by Juan Luna, the Assassination of Governor Bustamante by Felix Resurreccion, the Manungggul Jar, the anthropomorphic burial jars from the Maitum Caves in Saranggani, and the San Diego Galleon treasures.

Not to be missed, come take my tour soon and be pleasantly surprised with a museum considered majestic and an equal to any museums abroad. Next tour dates are November 19, 22, 23, and 26, and December 3, 6, 10, 13, 17, and 20, 2008. Adults are 700 pesos and children 500 pesos.
